Isabelle Kohler is a tenure track assistant professor at the division of Bioanalytical Chemistry, Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her major research interests lie at the intersection between bioanalysis, metabolomics, and forensic/clinical toxicology. Her expertise includes the development of state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based approaches for the analysis of metabolites (i.e., small molecules such as drugs, drug metabolites, or endogenous compounds) in complex biological fluids and tissues. Notably, she is interested in investigating the pharmacokinetics and toxicokinetics of new psychoactive substances (NPS). She also focuses on developing novel analytical approaches based on metabolomics for clinical and forensic applications, as well as novel chiral approaches for the separations of drugs stereoisomers.
Isabelle currently leads projects focusing on the development of novel strategies to assess the metabolism and toxicity of NPS as well as structural and optical isomers.
Isabelle is a Board member of the Dutch Society for Mass Spectrometry (NVMS, Secretary), the Society for Microscale Separations and Bioanalysis (SMSB, Secretary and Webmaster), as well as the Stiching for International Mass Spectrometry Conference 2022 (IMSC2022, Secretary)
She was awarded in 2014 an Early.Postdoc Mobility grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation for her postdoctoral fellowship. In 2018, she was nominated for the Faculty of Science Teacher Award at Leiden University.
Isabelle is involved in the MSc Chemistry track Analytical Sciences (MSc AS) of the UvA-VU master program, the MSc Drug Discovery and Safety track Bioanalytics (MSc DDS) of the VU, the Bachelor track Farmaceutische Wetenschappen of the VU, and the Bachelor Scheikunde at the UvA-VU. She coordinates the courses Bioanalytical Sciences (MSc AS), Advanced Bioanalytical Sciences (MSc DDS), and Current Topics in Analytical Chemistry (BSc Scheikunde). In addition, she is a lecturer in courses at the Master’s and Bachelor’s levels, including Biomarkers and Proteomics (BSc Scheikunde) and Bio-Analyse en Farmaceutische Toxicologie. Over the last years she has been involved in the selection of candidates for the COAST MSc+ Talent Program. Lastly, she is actively involved in the MSc Chemistry “Chemunity”, mentoring students on different aspects related to career, network, as well as diversity and inclusion.
