Arian van Asten is full professor in Forensic Analytical Chemistry and On-scene Chemical Analysis at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) since 2018. He is also the co-director of the Co van Ledden Hulsebosch Center (CLHC), the Amsterdam Center for Forensic Science and Medicine. Prior to his appointment he worked for 12 years at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) as member of the management team, department head and R&D and complex/international case coordinator. Before entering the forensic domain, he worked for 10 years in industry (AkzoNobel and Unilever). Van Asten holds a PhD in Analytical Chemistry (specialization chromatography and polymer analysis) from the UvA.

Van Asten received the Kolthoff award of the Royal Dutch Chemical Society (KNCV) in 1996 for his PhD thesis entitled ‘An Exploration of Thermal Field Flow Fractionation’.

Arian is member of the editorial board of Forensic Chemistry and an advisory member of the scientific working group of NICAS (Netherlands Institute for Conservation+ Art+ Science+). He participates in the scientific committee for the EAFS (European Academy of Forensic Sciences) 2022 conference to be held in Stockholm, Sweden and is also the chair for the Forensic Chemistry track of the program.

Van Asten is the scientific director of the Forensic Science Master (MFS) program of the UvA. This MFS track offers a two year international curriculum in forensic science unique in the Netherlands. Within this program van Asten coordinates the Literature Thesis and Research Project assignments and is involved as a supervisor and examiner in forensic chemistry related assignments. Arian furthermore coordinates and teaches the CAFE (Chemical Analysis for Forensic Evidence) course, a specialization course on forensic analytical chemistry for students for MSc Chemistry track Analytical Sciences and the MFS. Arian also frequently gives popular lectures on forensic science and is a guest lecturer in various courses at universities in the Netherlands and abroad.
